History of Ernakulam YMCA

  • The YMCA was started on the 1st April 1939 in a small building in Cannonshed Road, on a monthly rent of Rs.25/-. This building could accommodate hardly half a dozen members. Next year the YMCA was shifted to a larger building in T.D. Road.

 

  • The Brititsh Diwans of Cochin State Mr. A.F.W. Dixon I.C.S. and Sir George Boag were patrons of the YMCA during their tenures. They showed keen interest in the growth and activities of the YMCA

  • The Maharajas of Cochin State by nature and tradition were secular in outlook and supported all good causes irrespective of religion. Our Maharaja extended material help to the YMCA when we were badly in need of funds.

  • In the year 1949 we purchased the present site in Chittoor Road at a cost of Rs.73,000/-. Foundation stone for the first building was laid by Sri. S.K. Patil, Union Cabinet Minister.Construction was inaugurated by H.E. the Governor Shri. V.V. Giri on 28.01.1960.

  • The Golden Jubilee celebration of the Ernakulam YMCA was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of Kerala, Shrimathi Ram Dulari Sinha in 1989. The Platinum Jubilee Celebration of the Ernakulam YMCA was inaugurated by His Excellency Shri. Nikhil Kumar, the then Governor of Kerala in the year 2013.

  • The Ernakulam YMCA is a charitable society registered under the Travancore Cochin Literacy Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act 1955. We are rendering charitable, educational, social, humanitarian and youth development activities for the welfare of the society.

 

  • We have three branch YMCAs at Palarivattom and South Area - Indira Nagar in Kadavanthara 

 

  • The Charitable Projects - YMCA Boys Home, Home for the destitute children (Orphanage) at Thrikkakara, Special School & Home for the Mentally Challenged Children, YMCA Women’s Hostel for students and working women are very need oriented and popular in Cochin City.

 

  • The Ernakulam YMCA has three hostels for students and working men and women. We also have an International  House at the Main YMCA, International Youth Centre at Palarivattom and International Guest House at Edappally.

 

 

  • The Ernakulam YMCA is conducting indoor and outdoor sports and games activities for the people through our Branch YMCAs at South Area and Palarivattom.

 

  • The YMCA also organizes multifarious programmes for the under- privileged and destitute children. We also have regular on-going programmes and a Special School for the Mentally Challenged Children.
